Goodbye Tianjin!

14 Jun 2017 - Mateo Atwi

This past weekend we left Tianjin to travel to Shenzhen. I really liked Tianjin. By far, the most important thing I left in Tianjin was the people. Unfortunately, all I could bring was my memories of them and the gifts they gave me. I’m sure I will stay in touch because they are very interesting people and very dear friends already. Here is the link to article that they wrote about us.
Tianjin University has a program they call the ambassador program. Students from the university join a “club” that welcomes visiting students from other universities. These students helped us travel from the airport to the hotel and made sure we could buy everything we needed. China would have been scary and foreign without them.
More than just helping us, they also befriended us. They took us out to dinner and did different things with us. Over the weeks, we played badminton and sang karaoke, ate lots of different kinds of Chinese food from hotpot to fish to barbecue. We played basketball against the school B-team while the ambassadors watched. We got to ask them questions, and they got to ask us questions. For example, I think it was unheard of that I was home schooled. Almost sadly, they were fascinated that I came from a large family because they were all single children.

We sang and played instruments for each other too.

Unfortunately, we couldn't stay in Tianjin forever, so now we are off to Shenzhen and new friends and experiences!
Also, my friend Connor wanted this shout out, so here it is:
